From Self-Sabotage to Self-Care: How to Break the Start and Stop Rollercoaster

For generations, women have been socialized to prioritize the needs and want of others above their own, often at the expense of their own well-being and personal fulfillment, leading to a cycle of self-sacrifice and a sense of being trapped.

As women, we tend to put everyone else first and ourselves last on our own list. 

We prioritize our careers, families, and social lives, often neglecting our health and well-being, and it’s hurting us.  

We start strong, committing to self-care and healthy habits, but all too often, we fall victim to the start-and-stop self-care rollercoaster. 

We become distracted, lose motivation, and ultimately sabotage our progress. 

I’ve seen this over and over again with the thousands of women who came to my clinic. I even had a name for it as a diagnosis which we put in the top corner of our charting… Subconscious-Self-Sabotage or better known as “S.S.S.”

And it’s not our fault! 

The health and wellness industry is a disgraceful sham that preys on women’s insecurities and perpetuates unrealistic body standards. 

These profit-driven charlatans are only concerned with the young and naive, leaving older women to fend for themselves in the dark. 

They manipulate us into riding the self-care rollercoaster, setting us up for inevitable failure and then profiting from our desperation to try again. 

This broken system is not designed to help us succeed but to keep us hooked on their lies and false promises. Shame on them for perpetuating this toxic cycle of shame and inadequacy.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. This is a better way! 

In this blog post, we’ll explore five simple strategies to stay motivated and break the cycle of self-care sabotage.

The first step to breaking the cycle of self-care sabotage is prioritizing yourself. 

Let’s face it; we’re great at scheduling appointments for everyone and everything else except ourselves. We make sure our hair is perfectly styled, our nails are flawless, and our schedules are packed with meetings and appointments. 

But when it comes to scheduling time for our own self-care, we often fall short. 

We neglect to put ourselves on the calendar, and in the process, we neglect our physical, mental, and emotional health. It’s time to stop making excuses and start prioritizing our own needs. 

It’s time to shift your mindset and recognize that taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s essential. 

Start by setting aside an appointment time for yourself every day, even if it’s just 10 minutes. 

Use this time to meditate, journal, take a walk, or do something else that brings you joy. 

By prioritizing yourself, you’ll begin to see the benefits of consistent self-care and be more motivated to continue.

Get Creative

Isa Herrera - end pee leaksOne way to stay motivated is to break out of the self-care boredom and explore new activities that will challenge and inspire you. Your self-care should focus on reaching your goals, whether pelvic, bladder, or other health goals. 

So a bubble bath is not self-care! Self-care is intentional and joyful, and it should be easy and fun. But there should be a health and wellness reason behind your self-care. There should be a focus behind it as well. 

Try incorporating exercises you enjoy, such as pelvic floor safe dance classes, hiking, or swimming. 

Another way to stay motivated and be creative with self-care is to work with a community of like-minded women on a journey toward pelvic and bladder health like the ones in my Pelvic Wellness Community.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to get creative with your self-care routine. 

Experiment with new Kegels, try different mindfulness practices, or take a day off to indulge in self-care activities that light you up. Remember, your self-care routine should be enjoyable and nourishing, not a chore or obligation.

Accountability is key when it comes to staying motivated and consistent with self-care. 

Find a friend, family member, or mentor who shares your commitment to self-care and make a plan to hold each other accountable. 

This can be as simple as sending each other daily check-ins or meeting once a week to work out together. 

When you have someone or a community of like-minded women to support you and hold you accountable, you’ll be more motivated to stay on track and less likely to sabotage your progress.

Find Your Tribe

Building a community of like-minded individuals who share your values and goals can provide you with the support and encouragement you need to stay motivated on your self-care journey. 

You’ll be amazed at how much easier it is to stay consistent when you’re surrounded by people who uplift and empower you. 

Get rid of the energy vampires and surround yourself with a loving community. 

Create a “Self-Care Menu”

The menu can also have different exercises that help you build a strong-leak-pain-free body. I have a set menu for the Pelvic Wellness Community. All events are live, recorded, and placed in the special library so all members have access.  

To start creating a self-care menu, write down activities that you enjoy and help you feel good and will help you achieve your health and wellness goals.

Whenever you feel low or drained, consult your menu and pick an item that appeals to you. 

The act of choosing an activity that you know will make you feel good and get your body stronger can be incredibly empowering and motivating. 

And, since you already have a list of options, you won’t have to waste any energy trying to figure out what to do – you can choose and enjoy.

It’s time to stop sabotaging your self-care and prioritize your health and well-being. 

By prioritizing yourself, getting creative, and finding an accountability partner, you’ll be well on your way to breaking the start and stopping the self-care rollercoaster.
